Anglès és sense dubte terra de cultura i llegendes.

La tradició oral, amb més afany glorificador que rigor històric, conta que a les darreries del segle VIII, l’Emperador Carlemany es trobava per les nostres contrades en plena guerra amb els sarraïns i, vet aquí, que en arribar al cim de la muntanya de Puig de Frou, davant la gran bellesa que es mostrava als seus peus exclamà: “Quina Vall tan bonica, sembla la Vall dels Àngels”. D’aquesta gesta se’n fa ressó el text esculpit en pedra a la façana de Can Camps, al carrer d’Avall (antiga casa del governador). El cert, però, és que l’any 778 només una part de l’exèrcit de Carlemany passà per les nostres terres en direcció a les de l’Ebre; la resta només és fer volar la imaginació col·lectiva.

Tanmateix, amb un mica més de rigor històric, Joan Coromines cita l’origen de la nostra població en la seva gran obra Onomasticon Cataloniae: “(…) Vallis Anglensis (…) En un mot hi ha hagut sempre dos pobles més o menys importants en aquesta vall, amb dues esglésies, i sembla, adhuc, quatre. Era, doncs, ben bé la VALL DE ECLESIIS, la vall de les Esglésies (…)”.

Haurà de passar gairebé un segle per trobar-nos amb la derivació actual com a Anglès. Així en ho assenyala Villanueva a la seva obra sobre les esglésies de Catalunya, quan esmenta un document de l’any 949 que assenyala: “valle que dicitur Anglès”.
